Planned Economy Discussion Activity: The Spicy Scandal In Giant Jar

1. How were the resources wasted in the economy in USSR?
The resources in this case would be the mustard and the jar bottles. The gigantic jar of mustard was too much for anyone to eat, and since people couldn't finish the mustard and it got spoiled.And must be thrown away.The other resources is the labor The excuse of the factory which said to cut the paid they reduce by firing almost every worker and left with 333 workers.

2. What is the objective of producing goods and services for firms in a) a market economy b) a planned economy?
The objective in a  market economy is to make profit and satisfy the consumers' needs but a planned economy in contrast with the market economy its the government who decides what good or services will be produce and for whom it is produce for.

3. In a a market economy why would mustard companies be unlikely to make mustard in a 3 liter jars for consumers?
In a market economy it is unlikely that people will buy a 3 liter jar of mustard due to the choices it had in variation of sizes and brands. By deciding to make 3 liter jars mustard will cause the companies to lose all sort of profits.

4.  Apart from weight, what other instructions could the government economic planners in the USSR situation have given to the mustard makers for them to produce a useful product for consumers?
Apart from changing the size of the container to an absurdly large jar, other instructions could include adding a perseverance into the mustard to make it last longer. Also, to make sure that the mustard won't go to waste  becasue the taste is too spicy or for other reasons to make an additional flavor to it.

5. What problem does the article show with how planned economic systems work in terms of production?
Regarding how the article shows the problem of planned economic system the production is certainly very limited to a lot of restriction and the absurd instructions given which causes a lot of problems in the future if not plan carefully.
